How can light accelerate your healing?
How can light accelerate your healing?
Without light, there is no life.
Because light has an immense impact on our body, and how we can use it in dentistry to speed up your healing process is what you’ll learn in this blog.
Photomodulation is a non-invasive therapy that uses light of a specific wavelength to accelerate regeneration by providing body cells with more energy. The first studies and applications of this method were conducted by NASA in 2001 showing that light of a particular wavelength could stimulate mitochondria (the powerhouses of our cells) to produce more energy in the form of ATP.
This was extremely important for astronauts, as they couldn’t activate their muscles in zero gravity, which meant they couldn’t produce energy either. This technology helped them generate enough energy in their muscles despite the lack of movement. In other words, on a cellular level, metabolic activities are accelerated—and we take advantage of that.
We know this from our environment: plants use light to produce glucose and oxygen through photosynthesis. Similarly, humans produce vitamin D3 on their skin through exposure to light.
In dentistry, we can use this therapy in a very targeted way—to accelerate wound healing. After a surgical procedure, what we need most for regeneration is energy. Photomodulation thus leads to faster wound healing, pain reduction, and also has an anti-inflammatory effect. This means we need to use fewer medications, and you recover more quickly.
But we don’t use this fantastic therapy only after surgical procedures; we also apply it in orthodontics. Studies have shown that the treatment time for orthodontic procedures can be significantly reduced.
To experience all these positive effects of photomodulation, only a few short sessions are needed. Our patients have access to a dedicated area where they can relax fully during photomodulation treatment.
At Dentoss, we are especially proud to be one of the very few practices in Germany offering this therapy.
